A fantasy animated Netflix original series that follows two human princes, Callum and Ezran. They are thrown into this epic adventure to fix a mistake their dad, the king, made. Something about killing a dragon and stealing its egg. They then make an unlikely alliance with an elven assassin named Rayla (who was sent to their home to kill said dad, the king). The princes go on a quest to return the stolen dragon egg to its home in Xadia, a land of magical creatures. The journey is filled with danger, friendship, and discovery of magic (Dragon Prince). The whole thing is a rollercoaster, It’s really a coming of age story but with magic, dragons, and elves.
Ezran and Callum, two princes from the kingdom of Katolis are heirs to one of the five human kingdoms in the west. Humans in this show are depicted as having a diverse culture but have key components that separate them from the magical creatures. Humans were exiled for the use of dark magic and dark magic artifacts.
This world is connected to six sources of magic called Primal Sources. The main power entities of the natural world: Sun, Moon, Stars, Earth, Sky, and Ocean (Primal Sources). In the human world there are Primal stones. Stones filled with Primal magic and can serve as a connection to the source it came from. These stones are rare and highly coveted within the series.
Humans are also known to use a seventh source of magic, that draws magic from other creatures to fuel the powerful spells being conjured (Dark Magic). It’s dark magic, sounds creepy and evil.
In Xadia, the land of magical creatures. Where beings are born with a connection to a Primal source. For example, Rayla, a Moonshadow Elf assassin, draws on the spirit and energy of the moon.
The Primal sources are deeply intwined into the culture of this show and the land of Xadia. Influencing the relationships between species and the balance of power. This being said, a lot of the beings that live in Xadia have their own Kingdoms and powers of their own, for example;
The Sunfire Elves:
I am constantly amazed by the character designs for this elven race in the series. The monarchs wear large head pieces, their attire is often reds and golds. While elves that are not royalty or warriors tend to wear more casual clothing in warm tones, such as, gold, orange, bronze.
The Queen, Janai, is the holder of a Sunforged blade. A rare weapon that stays hot and can cut through anything (kind of reminds me of a lightsaber). I think their fashion and weapon choices really show their hierarchal structure of their society, even their strength.
I started watching this show because of Callums voice actor (Sokkas VA from Avatar the last Airbender). I had no regrets once starting the series. It has strong characters, tough themes, amazing world building, and very cool animation. In conclusion, if you enjoy fantasy stories and cool world building give the show a chance. The Dragon Prince is definitely worth checking out.
