Using The Heros Journey, in my experience, became a creative way to learn new Media things. Digital storytelling won’t be any different. The Heros Journey with Professor Brock blurs the line between virtual and real worlds and really creates an active engagement both in-world and out-world. It has truly empowered me to become a better learner, creator, and critical thinker.
Within the virtual realm, participants aren’t just passive observers. Creators and participants make their own avatars, and continue to make their own choices to shape a characters journey. A collaborative world building that allows us to contribute to the narratives fabric, designing environments and crafting the Heros lore. This has immersed me into the story, building virtual creations and creating a sense of community not just in class but in-world as well for new students.
Creating a “utility belt” for Second Life, each tool representing an emotional regulation skill, and using those tools within the story. Which then reflects on the outter-world and the possible encouragement of finding your own emotional regulation skills.
Creative projects, like writing and art, can translate the digital journey into realistic forms. Community engagement, through forums and lectures have created a place for classmates to collaborate and hone skills to make positive change within the Heros journey. Immersive assignments and world building projects lets us take ownership of our experience. Digital storytelling will be the last piece to not just creating The Heroes Journey but to have a truly transformative learning experience.
