The Power of Storytelling on Social Media

Remember when social media was just a fad? A place for cat videos and (now) cringey status updates? Well, how times have changed.  Social media has become a powerful platform for storytelling and influencing people in many ways!

Social media has been around for quite some time, taking off in the early 2000s with platforms like Myspace and later Facebook. These platforms set the tone for influencing people in various ways. It has become about sharing our experiences, our passions, and our perspectives, a place to captivate audiences and drive meaningful impact.

HOW SOCIAL MEDIA STORYTELLING WORKS

Emotional connections: Stories have the power to bring up empathy, joy, sadness, and anger. By sharing these personal narratives or creating a relatable character, you can form deeper connections with your audience.

Persuasion and Influence: Storytelling can subtly influence opinions and behaviors. By framing messages within a tale, you can make content more engaging.

Information and Education: Complex ideas can be simplified through storytelling, making information more accessible.

Entertainment and Inspiration: Stories can entertain, inspire, and motivate.

Social media story telling is a powerful tool that can be used to connect, inspire, and inform. It has made a huge impact on our culture and by using it responsibly you can harness its potential to create meaningful change. Keep telling your story!

ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR SOCIAL MEDIA USE
While social media is a powerful tool, it’s essential to use it responsibly.
You want to be authentic. Be genuine and transparent in your story
Respect for privacy
Encourage critical thinking and fact checking to combat misinformation

Adventure Awaits

The “Draw to win” series, apparently, a beloved collection of Choose your Own Adventure books, invites readers to become the protagonist, shaping their own narrative through a series of choices.  Each book offers a unique quest, filled with danger, excitement, and the power of decision-making. The seven classic quest from the series and small summaries are:

  • The Cave of Time (1982): Journey through a time-bending cave, encountering creatures from different eras and altering the course of history.
  • The Secret of the Hidden castle (1982); Explore a mysterious castle
  • The Mystery of the Phantom Thief (1983): Track down a cunning thief who’s stolen priceless artifacts
  • The Valley of Danger (1983): Traverse a treacherous valley filled with wild animals and natural obstacles
  • The Quest for the Dragons Fire (1984): Embark on perilous journey to retrieve a powerful artifact from a fearsome dragons lair
  • The Haunted House (1984): Enter a haunted mansion filled with ghostly apparitions and terrifying challenges
  • The Forbidden Island (1985): Explore a mysterious island filled with ancient ruins and dangerous creatures, searching for treasure

I haven’t personally experienced the “Draw to Win” series or delved into similar interactive storytelling formats like Dungeons and Dragons. Though I haven’t thoroughly educated myself until now I can see how these mediums with these types of formats have significant influence to people’s understanding of agency and immersive storytelling.

Agency, in this context refers to power to choose and shape one’s own narrative. In these interactive experiences, readers or players are given the freedom to decide the course of the story, leading to a sense of ownership and immersion.

For me, these forms of storytelling have been incredibly engaging. The ability to influence  the outcome of a story has made me feel more connected to the characters and the world the inhabit. I could see myself replaying sections to explore different paths and outcomes, just to see how my decisions would impact the narrative.

It has been quoted countless times, and its characters and storylines being referenced in movies and tv shows!

Vision and Visuals play a crucial role in shaping our understanding of the world. In The Princess Bride, the visuals contribute significantly to our understanding of the story. The film’s stunning camerawork, costumes, and imaginative special effects immerse us into the adventure. The actor’s facial expressions and body language convey a variety of information about the character’s emotions and intentions. It’s an unforgettable experience and a way to celebrate friendship and loyalty. By combining these elements, The Princess Bride creates a visually rich and engaging experience that guides the audience through the story and helps them to understand the characters, setting, and themes.

Digital Storytelling can be defined as the art of using digital tools to create and share narratives. It combines elements of traditional storytelling with the interactive and immersive capabilities of digital media. While, infographics are visual representation of data or information. Using a combination of text, images, and charts to present complex data in a simple and easy to understand format. In essence, both digital storytelling and infographics use visual elements to communicate information effectively. This is an example of how technology can be used to enhance communication and understanding.

This can also lead to wondering how drawing can be considered tech? Well, think about it this way: drawing is basically a way to communicate ideas visually, just like writing or speaking, it’s like a language but with pictures instead of words. Technology is all about making things easier and more efficient. Thus, leading to when you draw something on a computer or use a digital drawing app, you’re using technology to express yourself and share your ideas with others. According to “Draw to Win” 90% of all data transmitted online is visual.

We’re using technology to express ourselves and share our ideas with others! A superpowered sketch book right in our hands.
